New York State Digital ID Design

New York State Digital ID Design

I designed an app prototype for a Digital ID system in New York State, as they are becoming increasingly more common in the United States. The app features a user-friendly interface that would allow residents to manage their identification details digitally. The ID features all of the necessary information in a compact form with a large focus on typographical hierarchy.

Challenge

The main challenge for the app prototype was balancing a sleek, modern design with a theme rooted in New York State's identity. I developed several iterations for the project, continually refining it to achieve a final concept that felt both visually striking and true to the state. My goal was to ensure the app not only looked contemporary but also reflected the distinct character of New York.

Results

The prototype was thematically centered around the New York State flag, incorporating its iconic colors and symbolism throughout the design. I recreated the state seal, which appears subtly in the background behind the user, adding a layer of identity and authenticity. It was important for me to design something that not only matched the aesthetic of New York but also evoked a sense of pride and belonging for its residents.

Process

Research & Analysis: I conducted research on the history of New York State, the origins of the flag and its colors. This helped me ensure that the visual elements I incorporated would resonate with the state's cultural heritage and symbolism.

Wireframing: I created high-fidelity wireframes to carefully define the layout I wanted and structure of the app. I explored various design options and went through multiple iterations to refine and perfect the prototype’s visual and functional elements.

Prototyping: Based on feedback from my peers, I made consistent changes to the visual identity of the app. When prototyping, I focused on creating engagements that felt snappy and quick, while ensuring it provided moments of "delight" for the user.

Visual Design: The visual design of the project was inspired by New York State’s iconic symbols, incorporating bold, contrasting colors from the state flag to create a striking and cohesive aesthetic.

Conclusion

The Digital ID app prototype for New York State was a blend of modern design and state-specific identity. Through extensive research, wireframing, and iteration, I created a sleek, user-friendly design that balances functionality with visual appeal. The incorporation of New York's flag colors and seal ensures the app feels authentic and connected to its audience, while subtle design elements offer an engaging user experience. This project challenged me to think critically about typographical hierarchy and functionality, ultimately leading to a solution that I believe would be a good implementation for the state.
